The Matchup

Miami continues its SEC road trip, as the Hurricanes face the Mississippi State Bulldogs Sunday afternoon. The contest is set for 1 p.m. ET at MSU Soccer Field and will be televised live on SEC Network+.

The Hurricanes lead the all-time series over the Bulldogs, 1-0-1. In the most recent meeting between the two sides, Miami and Mississippi State played to a 0-0 draw at Cobb Stadium last year.

Scouting The Bulldogs

Mississippi State is coming off of its first loss of the season, falling to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 1-0, Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs return over 12,000 minutes played from a year ago, while adding 2022 MAC Offensive Player of the Year Kennedy White and two-time All-Sun Belt Conference performer Ilana Izquierdo.

MSU landed five players on the Preseason All-SEC Watch List as Maddy Anderson, Macy Hodge, Haley McWhirter, Maggie Wadsworth and Izquierdo were all recognized by the league. Meanwhile, White was named to the prestigious Hermann Trophy Watch List, becoming the first State player in program history.

Tracking The Hurricanes

Miami enters Sunday’s showdown following a 0-0 draw at No. 5 Alabama. The Hurricanes snapped the Crimson Tide’s NCAA-leading 22-game home winning streak, holding Bama scoreless in Tuscaloosa for the first time since Sept. 2, 2021. 

The Canes bring back 74 percent of their roster, including seven starters from a year ago. Miami has eight newcomers—all freshmen—on the 2023 roster, joining the 17 returning letter winners.

She’s a Keeper

Against Florida, Melissa Dagenais became the first Hurricane to record 200 career saves since Phallon Tullis-Joyce reached the milestone in 2018.

Within the Hurricanes’ record book, Dagenais ranks sixth in shutouts (11) and seventh in saves (210).

2022 in Review

The Hurricanes finished the 2022 campaign with five home wins and five shutouts—the most by the club in six seasons.

Miami mounted signature victories over eventual NCAA College Cup semifinalist Alabama in August and then-No. 24 Virginia Tech in October.

Looking Ahead

The Hurricanes conclude non-conference play, as Miami meets crosstown foe FIU Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at FIU Soccer Stadium.
