Miami Dominant in Season Opener at Stetson

DELAND, Fla.  The University of Miami rowing team opened its spring season with outstanding performances on Saturday morning, taking home first-place in each finish at Stetson.

“That was an excellent start to our season,” head coach James Mulcahy said. “All crews did a good job keeping their focus internal and stuck to their rhythms, despite some tricky conditions on the lake.”

The Hurricanes competed at Stetson’s home course at the Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center on Lake Beresford.

“Stetson was an excellent host and we’re very grateful for their flexibility in pulling off the regatta before the weather took over.”

The 1v8 kicked off the race for the Hurricanes, crossing the finish line in 6:34.2.

“All in all, this is exactly what we wanted to start the year – wind, water, good competition, and a chance to test ourselves!”

The 2v8 followed the dominant performance of the 1v8, crossing the finish line with a race time of 6:51.5.

Miami’s team captains, Mimmi Balaam and Emma Tschetter, both felt this was a dominant start to the season for the Hurricanes.

“This morning was a positive race program wide, setting the tone for the rest of our season. Go Canes,” Balaam and Tschetter said.

Miami’s 1v4 and 2v4 closed out the race, taking home first and second place respectively. The 1v4 boat finished with a race time of 7:59.1, over 30 seconds ahead of Stetson’s varsity four boat. Shortly after, the 2v4 crossed the finish line with a time of 8:25.6.

“The athletes learned a lot about what works well and what needs refining for their racing. We’re excited to resume the process of seeking improvement in practice. Go Canes,” Mulcahy said.

The Hurricanes return to action at home against Rochester on March 13 at the Shane Center in Miami Beach, Fla.
