Grimstad Garners WGCA All-America Second Team Honors

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami women’s golf senior Renate Grimstad was selected as a Second Team All-American Tuesday, as announced by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).

Capping the season with a program record-shattering 71.00 scoring average through 20 rounds of competition, Grimstad is the 22nd individual Hurricane to achieve All-America distinction in program history.

“Renni was off to a great start this year and was ranked atop the ACC [in scoring]. We were excited for what the spring had in store,” Miami head coach Patti Rizzo said. “She won her first college tournament and was looking forward to winning more before our season ended.”

Despite the Hurricanes’ season being cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Grimstad’s dominance on the course was evident.

Along with setting a new program record, besting former UM standout golfer Dewi Weber’s 71.94 scoring average from 2016-17, the Bergen, Norway, native led the entire Atlantic Coast Conference with a -0.85 relative to par scoring average.

“She gained so much confidence,” Rizzo said. “I think it had a lot to do with understanding who she is as a person and setting her own personal expectations instead of trying to live out everyone else’s expectations. She’s a very hard worker and she was reaping the benefits of her hard work.”

After securing her first collegiate title with a dominant 15-under-par performance at the UCF Challenge (Feb. 2-4), seven-strokes lower than the competition, and later capturing February’s ACC Golfer of the Month accolades, Grimstad ranked 29th nationally in the final golfstat.com rankings.

"I have dreamt about calling myself an All-American since my freshman year, but didn't realize, at first. how hard it would be to make this list," Grimstad said. "This past year was the first time I actually didn't write down any awards or ranking points on my list of goals and it turns out that once I took the focus away from that, it started happening automatically.

“I’m humbled and excited for this award,” Grimstad continued. “…I’ve changed so much the last four years and I’ve realized that I had to grow a bit more confident in myself and my choices to perform at my potential.”

A two-time All-American (1981, 1982) during her playing days at The U, Rizzo understands the hard work and determination that goes into earning the prestigious accolade.

"Being an All-American is a great honor to every college athlete," Rizzo said. "It is an accomplishment not many athletes ever achieve. It stays with you forever and gives you a special status."

Overall, the second-team recognition matches Weber’s status in 2017, tying the program’s highest individual mark since 1993, when Julie Brand secured first-team honors.

The selection process for this prestigious honor is quite rigorous and is determined by the WGCA Awards Committee for each Division.

Each Awards Committee member reviews the tournament profiles of all candidates and make comparisons between the players. Criteria used to evaluate each player include, head-to-head competition, comparison with common opponents, scoring average (adjusted), place finishes in regular season events and strength of schedule.
