UM Announces Jill Ellis as Guest Speaker at Celebration of Women’s Athletics

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former U.S. Women’s National Team soccer coach Jill Ellis is set to serve as the guest speaker at the University of Miami’s Celebration of Women’s Athletics, as announced by the athletic department Monday.

“I want to thank Blake [James] and the Athletic Department for inviting me to the University of Miami’s Celebration of Women’s Athletics,” Ellis said. “It is always an honor to champion the power of women in sports, and I very much look forward to joining these inspiring student-athletes.”

The 2019 FIFA Coach of the Year, Ellis made history last season, becoming the first coach to lead her team to back-to-back World Cup Championships (2015 and 2019). She finished her tenure as the head coach of the USWNT as the most successful coach in program history, recording a 106-7-19 record, including a 13-0-1 mark in World Cup matches.

Ellis has coached the most USWNT games in program history and closed her historic career on a 17-match winning streak. With Ellis at the helm, the USWNT averaged 3.1 goals per game and conceded just 0.5. The team earned a shutout in 83 of her 132 games.

Prior to taking the helm of the USWNT in 2014, Ellis spent 12 years at UCLA, leading the Bruins to eight NCAA Final Fours.
