Saturday Results | Friday Recap

RIVER FALLS, Wis. Daevenia Achong and Selma Cadar of the University of Miami women’s tennis team each picked up two singles victories Saturday at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

No. 80 Achong dropped just seven games across her straight-set triumphs, while Cadar defeated both the tournament’s top seed and a top-100 opponent.

“Daev and Selma are doing what we know they are capable of,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “They need to keep their noses down, keep working hard and be there for each other.”

Achong, a sophomore from Geleen, Netherlands, started play at the Milwaukee Country Club by cruising by Northwestern’s Vanessa Streng, 6-2, 6-1.

Cadar then took the court against top-seeded Csilla Fodor of Purdue, winning the first set in a tiebreaker and then narrowly earning the second for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 triumph.

In the third round of play, Achong again rolled to victory, easing past Kristina Novak of Nebraska, 6-1, 6-3. She will square off with second-seeded Nina Geissler of LSU Sunday in the main draw quarterfinals.

Cadar, a freshman, followed that up by logging the first ranked win of her career in her first such opportunity. After dropping the opening set against the draw’s No. 11 seed, No. 82 Martina Capurro of Oklahoma, Cadar won 12 of the final 19 games for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision.

The Bucharest, Romania, native will also play an opponent from LSU in the quarterfinals Sunday, as she is set to meet Safiya Carrington, a fellow freshman.

In addition to their singles success, Achong and Cadar also competed in doubles Saturday morning after their first-round bye Friday. The duo, seeded second, dropped a 2-8 result to Radka Buzkova and Martina Kudelova of Florida Atlantic.

The contests at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic were the lone ones for the Hurricanes Saturday, as the five players at home in Coral Gables, Fla., for the Miami Fall Invite did not compete due to weather canceling the action.

Times for Sunday’s matches in the Badger State are still to be determined. For more information on the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, including a live stats link, click HERE.
