CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second straight year, Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team has garnered ITA All-America singles recognition, as announced Wednesday evening.

The Madrid native becomes the 16th player in program history to receive ITA All-America recognition multiple times, including the 12th to do so in singles at least twice. She is the seventh Hurricane to make the cut as both a freshman and sophomore, including the sixth to do so both years in singles.

“This is a nice honor to end a successful sophomore season,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “All-America status is tough to earn and we are very happy for Estela.”

Perez-Somarriba turned in one of the best singles campaigns ever by a Hurricane, finishing 39-8 to rank sixth in single-season victories. The ACC Player of the Year and ITA National Player to Watch went 20-5 against ranked foes, including 10-3 versus top-30 players and 5-1 against top-10 opponents.

In the spring alone, Perez-Somarriba compiled a 28-3 record, posting a 23-2 mark at the No. 1 position. She received the third seed in the NCAA Singles Championship, reached the Sweet 16 of the tournament for the second year in a row and ended the season ranked fifth nationally.

Perez-Somarriba is one of 14 sophomores in the country on the ITA All-America list, just half of whom garnered the accolade in singles. Only four also made the list last year, with just the three doing so in singles both years.

The ACC paced all leagues in number of honorees and total recognitions, as 14 players from five schools combined for 18 total accolades, with six coming in singles.

Perez-Somarriba’s ITA All-America distinction is the 65th by a Hurricane, including the 31st in Yaroshuk-Tews’ 17 years at the helm.

The Hurricanes have tallied nine ITA All-America awards in the last five seasons, including seven in singles. This is the 14th time in the last 15 campaigns at least one Miami player has made the cut.
