CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four members of the University of Miami baseball program were selected to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Seniors Jeb Bargfeldt, Michael Burns and Cooper Hammond were joined by sophomore Evan McKendry on the 50-member All-ACC Academic Baseball team. Bargfeldt, Hammond and McKendry are two-time honorees, while Burns earned his first All-ACC Academic distinction.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students.
Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
A criminology major from Owasso, Okla., Bargfeldt was excellent in his final season as a Hurricane. The senior, who was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 29th round of the MLB Draft, did not miss a turn in the rotation in a year he threw a team-high 101.1 innings. Bargfeldt struck out 76 batters and threw two complete games while posting a 3.38 ERA. In two years at Miami, Bargfeldt made the Provost’s Honor Roll and Dean’s List twice, Athletic Director’s Honor Roll three times and was a four-time Book Buster.
A political science major from Littleton, Colo., Burns appeared in the Canes’ starting lineup 51 times, playing in all but three contests in 2018. The versatile outfielder hit .263 over 186 at-bats, ranking fourth on the team with 21 RBI and tying for fourth with eight doubles. Burns made the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll three times in four semesters and was a four-time Book Buster.
A graduate student in the School of Education, Hammond picked up his second All-ACC Academic award after being named to the 2015 team following his sophomore season. The sidewinding right-hander proved to be a quality reliever for the Canes in 2018, going 2-2 with a 2.36 ERA over 26.2 innings pitched. A native of Venice, Fla., Hammond also tied with Frankie Bartow for the team lead with four saves while making 27 appearances out of Miami’s bullpen. Hammond has made the Dean’s List, Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and Book Buster Club twice each while working on his master’s degree in special education.
An entrepreneurship major from Pembroke Pines, Fla., McKendry put together a breakout season on the mound, where he led the Hurricanes staff in wins (seven) and strikeouts (114), as well as compiled a 3.52 ERA – second-best among weekend starters – while earning Third-Team All-ACC honors. McKendry did not miss a turn in the rotation, making 14 starts and posting the first 100-strikeout season by a Hurricane hurler since Bryan Radziewski accomplished the feat in 2014. He was a three-time ACC Pitcher of the Week selection, winning the award outright on Feb. 26 and March 12 and sharing the honor on March 26. McKendry has earned Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and Book Buster Club in all four semesters he has been at Miami and made the Dean’s List once.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
