Templeton Named ACC Co-Player of the Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami setter Haley Templeton was named ACC Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Notre Dame’s outside hitter Rebecca Nunge.

The redshirt junior led the Hurricanes’ offense in a 3-0 weekend at the Sunshine State Classic, helping the team improve to 6-0 this season, the program’s best start since 2011. Templeton, the tournament MVP, got the weekend going by tying her career-best performance of 56 assists in the 3-2 victory against FAU and then added two more match-high performances against UCF and FGCU to complete the weekend with 128 assists.

“I’m so happy to be back on the court playing again and playing well is just an added bonus to that,” Templeton said. “Sitting out last year made me realize how much I missed competing. The atmosphere and culture we have here at Miami is the reason we have had great success already and I can’t wait for another great season.”

The Alpharetta, Ga., native had at least four kills in each of the contests and hit progressively well over the course of the weekend, notching a total of 19 kills and hitting a .333 overall. Templeton contributed an ace in each of the matches.

The setter played her part on defense as well, recording 16 digs and seven blocks – season highs of eight and four, respectively, against the Owls on Friday. She topped off the weekend with her first solo block of the season in the 3-0 win against host FGCU.

“This is great, I am so happy for Haley,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “She has worked so hard to get back on the court after her injury. She has been playing well and doing a nice job leading this group. She certainly makes us a lot better.”

Templeton and the Hurricanes will head north this weekend to participate in the Sonesta Hotel Philadelphia Cherry & White Challenge. The Canes will take on Delaware on Friday afternoon (3:30 p.m.) before entertaining host Temple at 2 p.m., Saturday.
