Canes XC Starts Strong at FAU Invitational

BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Hurricane’s cross country program had a trio of top finishers at the FAU Invitational on Friday night.

Miami’s men’s team took the top two spots in the men’s 5K, as Nathan Kuck earned his first victory as a Hurricane. A graduate student from Cincinnati, Ohio, Kuck finished first with a time of 15:18, while senior Sean Grossman was second with a time of 15:38.

Kuck and Grossman led the Miami men to the team championship at the FAU Invitational, as Adam George, Dylan Sykes and Jacob Triarsi rounded out a Hurricanes group that combined to score 37 points.

“Nathan and Sean took control of the race early and continued to open the gap in the later miles,” Miami coach Damon Griffiths said. “We have some work to do to close the gap between the top five, but I’m satisfied for today.”

On the women’s side, freshman Maryam Jawid began her Miami career with a strong performance, as she placed second overall in the women’s 5K with a time of 18:07. Her time ranks sixth all-time at Miami in the women’s 5K.

“Maryam ran an excellent race and looked smooth,” Griffiths said. “To open her career with an all-time top ten performance is huge.”

Anne den Otter joined Jawid in the top five on the women’s side, as the junior finished fourth with a time of 18:45.

Miami’s women earned a second place finish, as Emma Langlois, Simone Vreeland and Abby Kettle joined Jawid and den Otter to score 56 points total.

The Canes, who had eight men and 12 women competing, will race again at the Miami Duals meet in Miami on Friday, Sept. 8.  The Hurricanes will be running against Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University.
