MIAMI WELCOMES BOBCATS TO THE LIGHT
• The Hurricanes will continue an eight-game homestand with a midweek matchup against visiting St. Thomas on April 5 at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field (ACC Network Extra).
• Miami carries a commanding 23-2 all-time series lead against the Bobcats, and has won 23 straight matchups in the series. All games in the head-to-head series, since St. Thomas rebranded from its original name of Biscayne College in 1984, have been played at Mark Light Field.
• The Canes topped the Bobcats 7-6 in 10 innings in last year’s matchup.
• Miami freshman righthander Greg Veliz (2-2, 2.39 ERA) will start opposite St. Thomas’ righthander Rene Arauz (2-1, 2.25 ERA) Wednesday night.
LAST TIME OUT: CANES FALL TO WAKE FOREST
• The Miami Hurricanes dropped two of three games to visiting Wake Forest from March 31 – April 2 at Mark Light Field.
• Miami fell in Game 1 (2-1) and Game 3 (9-0), but won Game 2, 5-1, thanks to a dominant performance by junior lefthander Jeb Bargfeldt.
• Bargfeldt went a career-long seven innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters. He allowed just three hits and had just one Demon Deacon runner reach as far as second base.
VELIZ IMPRESSING IN MIDWEEK ACTION
• Freshman righthander Greg Veliz has served as Miami’s midweek starter through the first half of the season and has impressed in his role.
• Veliz tossed a career-long 6.1 innings and surrendered just one run last time out at nationally-ranked FGCU. He struck out four batters, walked three and allowed three hits.
• Against FAU on March 29, Veliz delivered 5.2 innings and allowed just one run. He struck out a career high-tying seven batters and allowed just three hits.
• Veliz has held batters to a paltry .149 average this season, and has 29 strikeouts in 26.1 innings.
DESTINATION: OMAHA
• Miami made its second straight trip to the College World Series in 2016, marking the program’s 25th all-time trip to Omaha, Neb.
• Miami’s 25 College World Series trips are the second-most of any program in the country. The Hurricanes have won 48 games in the College World Series, the fourth-most of any program; Miami’s four national championships rank fifth-most.
• Since the NCAA began award national seeds prior to 1999, Miami has been among the top eight seven seasons: 1999 (#1), 2001 (#2), 2003 (#8), 2004 (#3), 2008 (#1), 2015 (#5) and 2016 (#3).
• The Hurricanes have never missed the College World Series when earning a national seed, making it all eight times they’ve earned the distinction.
