@CanesRowing Closes Out the Cardinal Invitational
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The University of Miami rowing team wrapped up the Cardinal Invitational with a pair of second place finishes.
Miami had five boats in action at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue, with each boat competing in three races over two days. Saturday’s action feature both a morning and afternoon session of racing, while Sunday morning’s races completed the weekend’s competition.
Sunday’s action featured the final race for each of Miami’s boats with the Canes running out of Lane 4 against Kansas, Clemson and Minnesota. The varsity 8 closed out a strong weekend of racing with a second place finish, posting a time of 6:42.309. Miami’s 1V4+ finished fourth with a time of 8:06.368 and the novice 8 placed second with a time of 7:40.951. The Hurricanes’ 2V8+ was fourth in its last race, posting a time of 7:07.915, and the 2V4+ wrapped up the weekend with a fourth place finish and a time of 8:17.483.
“We had more good racing again today,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Varsity had a great race placing second, as did the novice eight. Overall the weekend was a good start to the season. We were able to assess where we stand and what we need to do to improve for ACCs in two months.”
The Hurricanes started strong at the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday, led by an impressive showing by the varsity 8.
Miami raced out of Lane 5 in the morning session, facing off against Tulsa, Minnesota and Tennessee. The varsity 8 won its first race of the weekend, posting a time of 6:36.900. Miami’s 1V4+ finished fourth with a time of 8:14.126, while the novice 8 placed third with a time of 7:29.170. The Hurricanes’ 2V8+ and 2V4+ each finished fourth in their opening races of the weekend, posting times of 7:08.909 and 8:33.060, respectively.
The afternoon session put the Canes in Lane 3 against boats from Virginia, Louisville and Tulsa and the varsity 8 turn in another strong performance, finishing second with a time of 6:43.264. Miami’s 1V4+ finished fourth with a time of 8:11.448, while the novice 8 was fourth with a time of 7:47.246. The Hurricanes’ 2V8+ (7:16.073) and the 2V4+ (8:24.794) each finished fourth in its respective race.
“Day 1 of our 2017 racing season provided great racing opportunities for our crews to develop and improve,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said following Saturday’s races. “Our novices got their first race under their belt with a great first row. Our varsity 8 led the day with a fantastic “row from behind” performance in the first race and a strong, confident second place in our second race. Each boat will make some small adjustments for tomorrow with the goal to keep improving.”
