@CanesVB Falls to No. 3 Texas
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Miami volleyball team dropped its final match at the American Campus Classic, falling to No. 3 Texas.
The Hurricanes (3-3) battled the Longhorns on their home floor, but Texas defended its gym with a three-set victory.
The Longhorns (5-1) took the opening set, 25-17, thanks in large part to an efficient attack that hit .621 for the set. They also held Miami to a .158 hitting percentage in the first set.
The Hurricanes had their most productive attack in the second set, but could not overcome a Texas team that hit .457 en route to a 25-19 win before the intermission. The Longhorns closed out the match with a 25-10 victory in the third set.
Olga Strantzali led the Hurricanes attack against Texas, recording 12 kills to go with five digs. Fellow outside hitter Anna Haak tallied six kills, seven digs and a service ace.
Middle blockers Sakile Simmons and Lucia Pampana combined for three kills and a block, while Kolby Bird added two kills, a dig and a team-best two service aces.
Alyssa Basdavanos distributed 20 assists, adding four digs, a block and a kill, while libero Sylvia Hernandez tied for the team lead with seven digs.
Sara Duque had five digs, while Brooke McDermott had a kill and Madison Dill also saw action against Texas.
Following this weekend’s action in Texas, the Canes have two more non-conference tournaments before opening ACC play. Miami will travel to Manhattan, Kan., for three matches at the Wildcat Classic and is set to close non-conference play with three matches at a tournament at the University of Delaware.
