Wimbley Leads No. 17 @CanesTrack at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Miami track and field team closed out its stay at the 2016 Rod McCravy Memorial Meet with an impressive day on the track and in the field events.

One day after the Hurricanes had two victories, seven top 3 finishes and two school records, Miami continued its success with several outstanding performances.

For the second straight week, the Hurricanes had the top two times in the women’s 400m. Shakima Wimbley won the women’s 400m dash with a time of 53.08 seconds, while fellow junior Aiyanna Stiverne was second with a time of 53.71 seconds. Freshman Brittny Ellis was seventh with a time of 55.07 seconds, while freshman Erin Ford was 11th with a time of 55.96 seconds.

Ebony Morrison placed third in the women’s 60m hurdles final with a time of 8.25 seconds. Morrison ran a personal-best 8.24 in the preliminaries, the fastest time of any collegiate runner and second-best in the field, to tie Patrina Allen for fifth on Miami’s all-time Top 5.

Jamika Glades, who also qualified for the final by posting a time of 8.51 seconds in preliminaries, finished sixth in the women’s 60m hurdles final with a personal-best time of 8.39 seconds.

One day after setting a school record in the women’s 5000m, Gabrielle Hesslau placed 13th in the women’s 3000m run with a time of 10:03.91 that ranks third in UM history.

The women’s 4x400m relay of Aiyanna Stiverne, Brittny Ellis, Shakima Wimbley and Anthonia Moore combined to finish second with a time of 3:37.54. A second relay team of Samantha Gonzalez, Destiny Washington, Erin Ford and Jamika Glades placed 11th with a time of 3:47.68.

On the men’s side freshmen Isaiah Taylor and Myles Valentine each ran 6.88 in the 60m dash, finishing just two thousandths of a second apart. Taylor placed 13th with a time of 6.872 seconds, while Valentine finished 14th with a time of 6.874 seconds.

The Canes also made some noise in the field events, having a big day in the shot put and the pole vault.

Tiffany Okieme, who won the women’s weight throw on Friday, closed out her stay in Kentucky with a throw of 15.96m to finish second in the shot put. Precious Ogunleye was ninth with a mark of 14.07m, while Taylor Gunn (13.52m) and Zakiya Rashid (12.97m) each posted season-bests.

Gian Piero Ragonesi placed fifth in the men’s shot put with a personal-best mark of 18.19m that ranks second in UM history, while Daniel Polinski was 12th with a throw of 15.77m.

Nick Catchur placed fifth in the men’s pole vault, clearing an indoor personal best 4.85m to move to fifth on Miami’s all-time list.

Following this weekend’s action in Kentucky, the Hurricanes will return to Coral Gables to prepare for the Armory Track Invitational on Feb. 5-6 in New York.
