Wimbley Closes Out at USA Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Miami’s Shakima WImbley completed her stay at the 2015 USA Track and Field Championships Saturday, competing in the women’s 400m final.
Wimbley finished eighth in the 400m final, posting a time of 52.96 seconds. The sophomore had a memorable experience at the 2015 USATF Championships, beginning Thursday when she raced next to one of her idols on the track.
The sophomore raced next to four-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix in the opening round of the women’s 400m at the USA Championships. While many would be intimidated to race next to one of the top runners in the world, Wimbley was excited about the opportunity to showcase her ability against the best quarter-milers in the country. The gifted sprinter finished second to Felix in Heat 1 with a time of 51.70 seconds, earning an automatic qualification to the semifinals.
On Friday, Wimbley, who is one of two Hurricanes that competed this weekend in Eugene, Oregon, earned one of the eight coveted spots in the 400m final after she placed fourth in Heat 1 of the semifinals with a time of 51.09.
The sophomore was one of only two collegiate athletes to qualify for Saturday’s final, joined by Kendall Baisden of Texas.
Miami alumnus T’erea Brown saw her run at the USATF Championships come to an end Saturday. The 2011 NCAA champion did not advance to the women’s 400m hurdles final after placing 11th in the semifinals with a time of 57.33 seconds.
Athletes will earn spots on the 2015 IAAF World Championships team set for August 22-30 in Beijing, China, as well as on the Pan Am Games, Thorpe Cup, Pan Am Juniors and NACAC Championships teams.
