@MiamiTrack Travels to LSU Invitational
BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Miami track and field program travels to Louisiana for its final meet before the ACC Championships, the LSU Invitational.
The Canes will be among a talented field at the LSU Invitational providing a good environment for Miami to compete in before heading to the conference meet in two weeks. Action begins at 10:30 a.m. ET Saturday with the men’s and women’s javelin. The running events open at 12:30 p.m. ET with the women’s 3000m, while the men’s 4x400m relay will close the meet at 3:20 p.m. ET.
The Hurricanes will feature several outstanding athletes this weekend, including ACC Performers of the Week Shakima Wimbley and Carlos Mangum. Wimbley and Mangum are expected to lead the Miami women and men, respectively, as they both have top marks in the country. Wimbely ranks 11th in the NCAA In the women’s 200m (23.08) and third in the NCAA in the 400m (51.50), while Mangum ranks 25th in the NCAA East region with a hammer throw of 63.50m.
Miami also has three student-athletes heading to Baton Rouge fresh of victories a week ago at the Tom Jones Memorial Meet In Gainesville, Fla. Alysha Newman was the winner of the women’s pole vault, posting a season-best mark of 4.30m, while Precious Ogunleye won the women’s hammer with a throw of 60.33m. Gabrielle Hesslau was Miami’s third winner at Tom Jones, winning the women’s 3000m with a personal-best time of 10:00.29 that ranks second in UM history.
The Canes also will have standouts Henri Delauze, Christian Cook and John-Patrick Friday in action on the men’s side, while Jamika Glades, Kelsey Balkwill, Lea Johnson and Tiffany Okieme are expected to shine for the Hurricane women.
Following this weekend’s trip to Baton Rouge, the Hurricanes will focus on preparing for the ACC Outdoor Championships on May 14-16. The stakes only get higher after the conference meet as Miami will head to the NCAA East Preliminary and the NCAA Championships to close out a stellar 2015 outdoor season.
