@CanesRowing Closes Strong at Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO – The University of Miami rowing program closed out its stay at the San Diego Crew Classic with a pair of Grand Final races.

The Hurricanes’ 1V8+ and Novice 8+ competed in the Grand Final in their respective divisions, giving Miami two of the top boats racing on Mission Bay in San Diego on Sunday.

“The racing opportunities in San Diego were top notch,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “The day was led by the freshman/novice boat with an outstanding race to get third. I am proud of them for stepping up and improving from the day before. The varsity 8 had some positive moments in their race, but ultimately found themselves off the pace in second 1000. I know they are motivated to get back to work.”

The Novice 8+ was the first Hurricane boat in the water Sunday, racing in the Women’s Collegiate Novice Grand Final at 12:20 p.m. ET. The Canes were in a competitive field featuring San Diego, UCLA, Minnestoa, Sacramento State, UC San Diego and SMU, but the talented competition did not phase Miami as they placed third with a time of 7:26.43.

The 1V8+ raced in the Women’s Collegiate Varsity Grand Final that featured Duke, Kansas State, Sacramento State, Tennessee, and Saint Mary’s. The Canes crossed the finish line in 7:01.01, placing sixth in the top race for the collegiate varsity 8 division.

The two Hurricane boats earned their way into the grand final in their respective divisions thanks to strong racing on Saturday.

Miami’s 1V8+ raced in Lane 2 in Heat B of the Women’s Collegiate Varsity division, facing off against Tennessee, San Diego State, University of Portland, UC San Diego and Santa Clara. The Hurricanes proved to be one of the best boats in their heat, finished second with a time of 6:58.62.

The Canes’ novice boat followed the varsity’s lead and had a strong row on Mission Bay. Running out of Lane 5 in the Women’s Collegiate Novice Preliminary that featured UCLA, San Diego, Minnesota, Sacramento State, SMU and UC San Diego, the Hurricanes finished fourth with a time of 7:46.83.

“The whole squad will be back together Tuesday morning ready to push each other to get more speed as we look ahead to the Knecht cup and ultimately ACC championships,” Sanderson said.

Following this weekend’s action in San Diego, the Canes will return to Coral Gables to train for the Knecht Cup on April 11-12. Miami will also face off against UCF on April 25 in preparation for the ACC Championships on May 15-16.
