Diving Travels to Columbus for OSU Invite
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Miami diving team travels to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion this weekend to compete in the seven-team Ohio State Invitational, a premier meet slated to open Friday, Nov. 21.
Miami will be joined Kentucky, Kenyon, Purdue, Wisconsin, Virginia and the host Buckeyes.
“We’re going there for some good competition, this is really our first meet where we’ll be tested,” head diving coach Randy Ableman said. “It’s also good to see where we’re at leading into the Winter Nationals.”
Three Miami divers – Cheyenne Cousineau, Sam Dorman and Tanner Wilfong – will be competing in their first true competition of the fall after a trip to the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Malaysia in late October.
On one of diving’s biggest stages, Wilfong took third alongside Zach Cooper in the 10-meter synchro event, while Cousineau and teammate Katrinaa Young took bronze in the women’s field.
Dorman took fourth in the men’s 3-meter syncrho alongside Dwight Dumais.
“I think when you go to a meet like that and dive against some of the best in the world, you come back and go against divers on the university level, it puts things in perspective,” Ableman said. “I’m sure they wouldn’t be quite as nervous, because they were in a much bigger setting there. It’s a great experience, especially looking towards bigger meets.”
Ableman said the weekend also provides a chance for his divers to get familiar with the McCorkle Pavilion – the host site of this year’s USA Diving Winter National Championships. Miami will return to the same pool from Dec. 16-21 to compete in another prestigious event.
“The senior nationals are back up in Ohio in mid-December,” Ableman said. “We get to dive in the facility, get used to it, and see what we have to work on. It’s an important meet for us on a number of levels.”
Cousineau and Thea Vock are looking to continue momentum from a strong showing in a dual meet against Illinois State. Cousineau took first in the 3-meter (351.45) and second in the 1-meter (327.00), while Vock captured first in the 1-meter (340.05) and third in the 3-meter (345.30).
Friday will consist of men’s 1-meter and women’s 3-meter, Saturday will host men’s 3-meter and women’s 1-meter, while Sunday will consist of platform finals for both men and women.
Admission is free of charge, while live stats will be provided through OhioStateBuckeyes.com. A full schedule of the weekend events is listed below.
