Alysha Newman Wins Bronze Medal In Glasgow

GLASGOW, Scotland – University of Miami standout Alysha Newman won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Canadian cleared 3.80m to place third in the women’s pole vault final. A native of Delaware, Ontario, Newman is one of 50 athletes selected by Athletics Canada to represent Canada in the Commonwealth Games. The 20-year-old was the only Canadian in the field of 10 competitors in the women’s pole vault.

Newman earned first team All-America honors after placing seventh at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She scored two points for the Hurricanes after clearing 4.15m in the women’s pole vault.

Newman’s 2014 collegiate season was filled with noteworthy accomplishments. She earned All-ACC honors after placing second at the conference meet with a mark of 4.20m and set the UM outdoor record when she cleared 4.41m at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Newman was also an All-ACC selection indoors and earned first team All-America honors when she tied for fifth with a school-record mark of 4.35m.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games take place in Glasgow, Scotland July 23 to August 3 and are the largest ever multi-sport event held on Scottish soil. Athletics competition at the Commonwealth Games will take place at Hampden Park Stadium July 27 through August 2.
