URowing Starts Strong at Head of the Hooch
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Miami rowing program opened its 2013-14 schedule with a strong showing on Day 1 at the Head of the Hooch.
The Canes, competing in their only regatta of the 2013 fall schedule, were highly competitive on the Tennessee River.
“All the crews raced hard and with lots of poise,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said.. “It was great to see all their hard work in practice pay off in the races. I’m proud of the teams effort today and can’t wait for the racing tomorrow.”
Miami’s first boat in the water took the top spot in its race, winning the Championship 8+ with a time of 16:07.7. The Hurricanes placed ahead Oklahoma (16:17.6) and Texas (16:22.8). ACC foes North Carolina (7th, 16:38.7 and 21st, 17:38.4), as well as rowing clubs from Georgia Tech (22md, 17:42.4) and Florida State (28th, 18:59.0), also competed in the 31-boat field.
The Canes also had a strong showing in the Championship 4+ division as their A crew placed second with a time of 17:44.1, just seconds behind first place Tennessee (17:37.8). The Championship 4+ B crew also shined, placing eighth with a time of 18:16.6, giving Miami two boats finishing in the Top 10 of a 33-boat field.
The Hurricanes also competed in the Women’s College & Club Novice 4+, turning in a time of 23:21.1. Sanderson was pleased with how the novices performed in their first collegiate race.
“They did an outstanding job for their first race ever as Hurricanes,” Sanderson said.
