URowing Ready for Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Miami rowing program is set for its first and only race of the 2013 fall schedule.

The Canes will travel to Southeast Tennessee to compete at the Head of the Hooch. Known as the “Last of the Great Fall Regattas,” Head of the Hooch takes place on the Tennessee River, with the finish line in front of the grandstand at Ross’ Landing in Chattanooga.

Miami will have six entries this weekend, competing in Championship 8+, College & Club 4+, Championship 4+ and Club 8+.

“The Head of the Hooch Regatta is always a fun event that gives the athletes an opportunity to race against some great competition,” Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson said. “Our novice rowers will be rowing in their very first race for the U and the varsity members are eager to finally compete. Everyone is looking forward to a great weekend of racing.”

The Hurricanes bring back 22 rowers from a program that placed fourth at the ACC Championships a year ago, including CRCA National Scholar-Athletes Breanna Hayton and Hannah Meister. Hayton, who was also a 2013 All-ACC Academic selection, will help the Canes in the Championship 8+ race, while Meister is on one of two Miami crews in the Club 8+ division.
