CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In the inaugural edition of #MusicMonday, we decided to list some of our favorite pre-game songs. Since then, we have looked at some of the greatest stadium anthems in sports and the best hip-hop tracks heard at stadiums and arenas throughout the country.
This week’s edition of #MusicMonday looks at Canes starting center Shane McDermott’s pre-game music selections.
McDermott heads into the 2013 season as one of the top centers in the country. The junior was recently named to the 2013 Rimington Trophy spring watch list. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate center in NCAA Division I FBS. The Lake Worth, Fla., native was awarded the Walter Kichefski Endowed Football Scholarship at the 2013 UM Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and he will graduate this summer with his bachelor’s degree.
Once football season beings, McDermott knows exactly what tunes to listen to before a big game. The veteran offensive lineman tells us why these three tracks provide the prefect pre-game mood for him.
“Your Hand in Mine” by Explosions in the Sky
“This is the theme song from Friday Night Lights. I love listening to this song because it makes you picture in your head winning a big game or making a big play. It gives me goosebumps because what I think of the most is winning a championship and how I’d feel after the game.”
“Devil Went Down to Georgia” by Zac Brown Band
“This song is a classic that I love to listen to. The way they play all the instruments get my blood pumping.”
“Colder Weather” by Zac Brown Band
“I like to listen to this song before the game because it explains, in a sense, what sacrifices it takes to be a Miami Hurricane. Sometimes you have to give up things like the beach, fishing, hunting, and partying for the ultimate goal and that’s to win a championship. This song reminds me that as much as I would like to see all those things, right now I have focus on what I have to do on the field to be successful.”
Want a chance to submit songs for our 2013 football and basketball playlists? Every Monday, we will post a different playlist on Spotify, giving fans the opportunity to share with friends or add their own songs to the list.
Throughout the summer, different Miami student-athletes will submit some of their favorite songs to listen to before a game. There will also be fan submissions as we compile the ultimate Canes football playlist
