Three Programs Receive APR Public Recognition

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three University of Miami teams were publicly honored for being among the top 10 percent in Academic Progress Rates (APR), the NCAA announced Wednesday.

Men’s basketball, women’s cross country and women’s golf were recognized with APR Public Recognition Awards. It marks the third consecutive year that women’s golf has received an APR Public Recognition Award and the second straight year for women’s cross country, while men’s basketball earned its first public recognition.

“Our continued APR success is credited to the academic commitment made by our student-athletes, coaches and our academic services staff,” Director of Athletics Blake James said. “We continue to be very proud of our student-athletes’ performance and dedication in the classroom.”

Miami has now received 25 public APR awards in 10 sports since the program was instituted eight years ago – women’s golf (2006, 2011, 2012, 2013), indoor men’s track & field (2009), outdoor men’s track & field (2006, 2008, 2009), men’s cross country (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), women’s cross country (2012, 2013), men’s diving (2006, 2007, 2009, 2012), football (2010, 2011, 2012), baseball (2011, 2012), men’s tennis (2011) and men’s basketball (2013).

Each year, the NCAA honors select Division I athletic teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APR scores within their respective sports.

Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year’s release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision).

“For the eighth consecutive year, I commend our Hurricane teams for achieving excellence among their peers,” Associate AD for Academic Services David Wyman said. “I salute their efforts and their commitment to their educational and athletic endeavors.”
