Tate Advances to Track Quarterfinals
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami track and field program ended its first day at the NCAA East Preliminary on a high note.
Miami’s Alaine Tate ran the women’s 800m in a personal-best time of 2:05.20. The junior placed third in her heat, automatically qualifying for the Friday’s quarterfinal.
“Alaine competed tough and advanced with the second-fastest time in school history,” Miami director of track and field and cross country Amy Deem said. “We are looking forward to the next two days and the opportunity to advance more athletes to the next round.”
Tate was not the only Hurricane competing in the women’s 800. Sophomore Taneisha Cordell also competed in the 800m, finishing her heat in 2:10.07.
Tate and Cordell were two of seven Miami student-athletes competing on the campus of North Carolina A&T Thursday.
Isaiah Simmons finished 13th in men’s discus with a throw of 164’ 4”. The redshirt freshman will compete in the men’s shot put beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.
Sophomore Amber Monroe placed 22nd in women’s discus with a mark of 153’ 7”. Fellow sophomore Timothy Richardson placed 23rd in the men’s long jump with a mark of 23’ 5.50”.
Christian Cook ran the men’s 400m hurdles in 54.87 seconds. The sophomore is set to compete in the men’s 110m hurdles at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Alyssa McClure ran the women’s 100m dash in a personal-best 11.68 seconds, but did not advance to the next round. The junior will join sophomores Jokira Jiles and Jasmyne King and redshirt freshman Kelsey Balkwill in the women’s 4x100m relay on Saturday.
The Hurricanes are back in action at 10 a.m. Friday with Lea Johnson competing in the women’s hammer throw. Simmons will be the next Cane in action, followed by Cook. Tate will close out Miami’s day with the women’s 800m quarterfinal at 7 p.m.
