Miami Adds Alex Dunphy to VBall Staff
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami head volleyball coach Jose “Keno” Gandara added a new assistant to his coaching staff, announcing that Alex Dunphy would join the program for the 2013 season.
A former setter at USC, Dunphy will work with Miami’s setters and help Gandara with the Canes’ offense. The 27-year-old will also serve as Miami’s recruiting coordinator and assist with administrative duties. She will also work extensively with Data Volley, a popular volleyball statistics program. Dunphy joins assistant coach Lee Nelson on the bench for Gandara’s first season in Coral Gables.
“I am extremely excited to join Coach Gandara and Coach Nelson at the University of Miami,” Dunphy said. “Miami is a unique institution because it represents academic and athletic excellence. I have a great deal of respect for Coach Gandara, as a person and coach, and I can’t imagine a better place to work. I look forward to being a part of such an impressive program.”
Dunphy comes to Miami from Pepperdine University, where she served as the director of operations for the men’s volleyball team. Some of her duties working with the Waves include video breakdown and statistical analysis of Pepperdine and its opponents, creating scouting reports and preparing recruiting materials.
The daughter of Hall of Fame coach Dr. Marv Dunphy, Alex grew up around volleyball. She won a national championship in 2003 at USC and helped the Trojans reach the NCAA Final Four in 2004. Dunphy has experiencing coaching club volleyball in Santa Monica, Calif., as well as at her father’s annual volleyball camp. She also worked with USA Volleyball, serving as the Head of Delegation for the women’s junior national team in 2012.
“Alex will be a great addition to our staff and our program,” Gandara said. “She is a great person and loves volleyball. She comes to Miami from Pepperdine University where she has gained tremendous knowledge and experience working for Marv Dunphy, one of the best coaches in the country. She has been exposed to volleyball at the highest level, not only as a collegiate player at USC, but at Pepperdine University and with the USA program. Alex will be able to contribute right away in many areas and more specifically will coordinate our recruiting and work with the setters. Alex is definitely going to upgrade our program and I am looking forward to working with her.”
