Rowing Finishes Fourth at ACC Championships
CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Miami rowing program completed its 2013 season Sunday at the ACC Championships. Miami placed fourth in the conference with 27 points, up two spots from a year ago.
The Canes competed on Lake Hartwell against host school Clemson, Virginia, Duke, North Carolina and Boston College.
Strong performances from the two Varsity 8+’s propelled the jump to fourth place in a regatta that saw the University of Virginia win its 13th title in the 14-year history of the ACC Rowing Championship.
“This was a terrific way to cap the most successful season in team history,” Miami head rowing coach Andrew Carter said. “Our team depth is improving, as evidenced by the strong performance of both Varsity 8+’s versus a year ago. Our 1V put in an excellent performance in 2012 but to have our 2V jump from 6th to 3rd in a year tells me we’re on the right track as a program. This group has a lot to be proud of as we look back on the season.”
Beyond competing against its five ACC foes, Miami battled challenging weather as the winds picked up just before the races began at 9 a.m. and continued to get stronger throughout the racing program. The cross-head wind produced a choppy course and kept competitive times down across all events.
The Varsity 8+ was seeded fourth and raced out of Lane 5 in their event. After a good start, Miami faced the stiff winds on the far side of the course. The winds caused both Clemson and Miami to be overtaken by Duke at the 1250 meter mark and the Blue Devils never allowed an effective counter-move. Virginia finished first in the event for the 13th time in 14 years, matching their title count, with a time of 6:46.08. Duke finished second (6:54.35) followed by Clemson (6:57.47) and Miami (7:04.19). Boston College and North Carolina rounded out the field.
The second Varsity 8+ was seeded third going into the Championship and had some confidence heading into the race after their narrow defeat of Duke three weeks ago at the Clemson Invitational. The Canes got out with the leaders off the line and immediately began to separate themselves from the second half of the field. Miami chased the two leading crews from Virginia and Clemson, but it was not a three-crew race. The Canes overcame a strong early effort from Boston College and a late challenge from season-rival Duke to cross the finish line third behind event winners UVA and runner-up Clemson.
Miami’s Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ both finished sixth in their respective events to wrap up the day’s competition. Following the completion of the day’s racing, Virginia finished first with Clemson and Duke rounding out the top three. Behind Miami, Boston College finished fifth and North Carolina rounded out the group in sixth place.
The Canes will return to the water in August to prepare for their fall season.
