Canes Rowing Ready for ACC Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Miami women’s rowing team will spend Sunday racing for the conference championship.

Miami will join Virginia, Duke, Clemson, North Carolina and Boston College at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship regatta on Lake Hartwell. The ACC Championship is the final regatta of the 2013 spring racing season for the Canes.

“We’re really looking forward to the Championship this weekend,” Miami head rowing coach Andrew Carter said.  “This is, without question, the most significant target of our year and I believe we’re in the best position to compete since I’ve been at UM.  Our team has taken tremendous strides this year and I think they’re just wanting to be at the start line.”

The Hurricanes will race in all four events: Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+. The six schools will compete for places in each race, as well as the points-based overall ACC Championship.

Miami’s Varsity 8+ is seeded fourth and will race in Lane 5, with No. 2 Clemson and No. 6 UNC on either side of the Hurricanes. The Canes, who raced on Lake Hartwell at the Clemson Invitational, will try to improve on their times from that regatta. Miami finished 11.1 seconds behind No. 2 Clemson and 2.8 seconds behind No. 3 Duke three weeks ago.

The 2V is seeded third and will race in Lane 2. They will fight to maintain the 0.4 second advantage they achieved over No. 4 Duke on April 20 at the Clemson Invitational. The V4+ will race as the No. 5 seed in Lane 1 and the Novice 8+ is seeded sixth and will race out of Lane 6.

The races will begin at 9:00am EST with the V4+ and will continue through 10:00am with the final event, the 1V8+.  Online streaming of each race is available here.
