S&D Takes Third at Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA — Behind another strong day from sophomore Lucy Worrall, the Miami Hurricanes swimming & diving team captured third place at the Georgia Tech Invitational, finishing the three-day tournament with 772 points.

Worrall, who took first place in the 100 butterfly with an NCAA “B” cut time on Saturday, continued her strong run by taking first in the 200 fly. She touched the wall in a time of 2:00.06, just beating out Florida State sophomore Elizabeth Pepper (2:00.45).

“It was another great day for Lucy,” head coach Christie Shefchunas said. “We are very happy with this weekend’s performances from everyone.”

Freshman Katie Ligon and senior Hannah Kling earned points for Miami in the early going. Ligon took second place in the “B” final of the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.54, while Kling finished first in the “B” final of the 100 freestyle (51.01). Senior Christine Anderson captured third in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in a time of 2:16.31.

The Hurricanes’ entry in the 400 freestyle relay helped clinch a third-place finish. Worrall, Kling, senior Celeste Degen and freshman My Fridell took third in the event, finishing in a time of 3:25.27.

Not to be outdone, the Hurricanes’ diving trio of Kara McCormack, Lindsay Lester and Carrie Dragland took three of the top four spots in Sunday’s platform event. McCormack (273.20) took first, Dragland took second (255.15), while Lester captured fourth (242.45). Freshman Tanner Wilfong took second in the men’s platform event with a score of 343.10.

The swimmers have a month-long break before their next competition – a Jan. 11 dual meet with visiting Harvard. The divers will travel to UCLA the same weekend for the three-day long UCLA Bruin Invitational.

“We’re looking forward to getting home and getting some good work in before the winter break,” Shefchunas said.
