June 8, 2012
DES MOINES, Iowa – Sophomore Thandi Stewart of the University of Miami earned All-America status at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Friday on the campus of Drake University. Stewart represented the Hurricanes with a personal-best 56.53 mark to finish fourth overall in the race.
“I am very proud of how she came to her first national championship meet to run to two lifetime bests and place fourth overall,” said Director of Track & Field and Head Coach Amy Deem, who has now coached 87 UM student-athletes to outdoor All-America standing during her tenure.
The 400 meter hurdles has developed into a strength for the Canes, as Stewart makes it five-straight years that UM has had an All-American in the event. Ti’erra Brown won the NCAA national title last season in the race.
Stewart previously set her personal best with a 56.62 on Wednesday to qualify for the finals.
Junior Samantha Williams will make her debut on day four of the Championships on Saturday in the triple jump for the Canes. Her competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EST. Live results will be available through http://www.flashresults.com/2012_Meets/outdoor/06-06-NCAADI/Day1.htm.
