Miami Competes for SeaWorld Cal and Carley Copley Cups
April 1, 2012
CORAL GABLES, Fla.–In their 2012 regular season opener at the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic, the University of Miami Women’s Rowing Team finished first in their final races for both the SeaWorld Cal Cup and the Carley Copley Cup.
The first crew competed against 20 other teams from across the country at Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay for the SeaWorld Cal trophy. After an initial struggle in its original heat, the V8 finished with a time of 6:57.603 and moved on to finish first in the C-Final with a time of 6:49.59. “As you can see in the results, they did a great job in their final and had complete control of the race from start to finish,” said Head Coach Andrew Carter. “I don’t think anyone could ask for a better response.”
The second crew competed for the Carley Copley Cup and finished first in the B-Final, posting a time of 7:23.04 in their original heat and 7:18.97 in the final. “Their first 1000 meters was pretty solid but the third 500 meters were off pace and they fell out of A-final contention,” commented Carter. “However, like their teammates, they led their B-final from wire to wire, including withstanding a late and aggressive charge from the University of British Columbia.”
The Hurricanes will train for the next two weeks before taking part in their second regatta of the season, the Knecht Cup. “I think some valuable lessons were learned and we’ll be taking those forward as we prepare for another multi-stage regatta in N.J.,” said Carter.
