Canes Tune Up in Exhibition Race

Canes Tune Up in Exhibition Race

March 6, 2012

TAMPA, Fla.–The University of Miami women’s rowing team opened the season with an exhibition race against the University of Michigan over the weekend, on the Hillsborough River in Tampa, Fla. The race was split up into three heats of three boats each. Each heat consisted of four race pieces.

“The opportunity to row against top-notch competition is something we really relish, so this annual early-season scrimmage against Michigan is always a season marker,” said Head Coach Andrew Carter. “Not only does it mark the beginning of our transition from our preparation to competitive season, it’s also an early mark of what we’ve accomplished during that preparation phase.”

Michigan won all 12 races, but Miami finished second in two of the 12 heats.

“There is some good info we were able to take away from the competitive pieces our crews rowed today,” added Carter. “We certainly continue to progress with this young group, but there are some obvious areas in which we can improve. In reviewing the day, we’ve talked about that and I know the women have re-dedicated themselves to the goals we’ve set.”

The Canes will host the University of Connecticut on March 17 on Miami Beach.
