Chattanooga, Tenn. – University of Miami second-year rowing head coach Andrew Carter and the Hurricanes opened the fall season at one of the nation’s largest fall regattas, the Head of the Hooch, at Ross Landing Park in Chattanooga, Tenn. UM took part in three races on Saturday’s opening day action.

Miami opened the day with a victory in the College & Club Novice 8+, taking down 45 other participating crews from some of the best programs in the country. The UM winning “A” boat was rowed by the team of Amanda Vedros (1), Sarah Roper (2), Courtney Keller (3), Maggie Fragel (4), Chelsea Vandish (5), Julia Reisner (6), Katie Guest (7), Breanna Hayton (8) and Stephanie Holtz (coxswain).

The Hurricanes were 11 seconds faster than the second place boat the University of Texas.

UM took to the water next in the College & Club Novice 4+, with eight of the nine women from the Novice “A” 8+ crew doubling into the 4+. The Novice 4+ “A” boat finished just one second behind leader and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Duke for a second place showing. The Hurricanes’ boat was filled by Katie Guest (1), Julia Reisner (2), Chelsea Vandish (3), Sarah Roper (4) and Stephanie Holtz (coxswain).

The “B” crew placed fifth in the field of 48 boats, powered by the team of Christina Lighter (1), Amanda Vedros (2), Maggie Fragel (3), Courtney Keller (4) and Amanda DuPart (coxswain).

In the final event of the day for the Hurricanes, the Championship 4+ finished 13th in a field of 37, in what was a very competitive event. The boat was manned by Kodey Williamson (1), Sarah Medland (2), Katalin Horvath (3), Theresa Recicar (4) and Maria Siemann (coxswain).

“The team showed good poise in its racing today, and they all executed very well,” said Carter. “Their solid work on fundamentals this fall served them well today, and their enthusiasm for racing had a great deal to do with their results today.

“Everyone is plenty tired this evening, but they are all looking forward to the second day of racing tomorrow.”

Racing action continues tomorrow in the second and final day of the Head of the Hooch Regatta with UM entering three boats in the Open 8+ event.
