Brown, Jameson and Finch Shine in First Day of NCAA Preliminary Round
May 27, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami track and field teams saw impressive performances in the first day of the NCAA Preliminary Rounds hosted by North Carolina A&T at Irwin Belk Track.
Juniors Ti’erra Brown and Tameka Jameson ran the two fastest times in the first round of the 400m hurdles. Brown led all 48 competitors, crossing the finish line in 55.72 seconds – the second-best mark of her career. Tameka’s time of 56.31 seconds was the best of her career.
Tameka’s twin sister, Takecia also joined the 24 women that advanced Friday’s quarterfinal, as she recorded the ninth-fastest time at a season-best 57.72 seconds.
Each of the three women will race in one of three national quarterfinal heats on Friday at 7:15 p.m., with the top three times per heat and the next best three times advancing to the national semifinal in Eugene, Ore. in June.
Sophomore Brittni Finch tied Southern Mississippi’s Tori Bowie for the best mark in the qualifying round of the long jump at 6.43m (21-01.25). The mark was a career-best for the sophomore out of Dallas and now ranks fourth in school history with her effort. Finch, who placed in the top 12, will participate in the NCAA National Championships in June.
Senior Deandra Doyley narrowly missed on advancing with her jump of 6.13m (20-01.50), but she will have another opportunity to reach the championships, as she will compete in the triple jump, Saturday at 4 p.m.
Senior Kristy Whyte, with her time of 11.40 seconds in the first round of the 100m dash, advanced to the Friday’s quarterfinal at 6:15 p.m. The time was the second-best of the season for the Pembroke Pines, Fla. native.
Before she competes in the 400m hurdle quarterfinals, Brown will race in the 100m hurdle first round at 5 p.m. She currently holds the nation’s second-best time in the event at 12.70 seconds.
Tomorrow’s action will get underway at 4:30 p.m. when Devon Hill and Cory Nelms compete in the 110m hurdles first round. Hill owns the fastest time in the event on the season at 13.80 seconds, but Nelms won the ACC Championship in April. In March, Hill won an ACC Title of his own, in the indoor 60m hurdles.
In the high jump, junior Megan Novinger leapt 1.74m (5-08.50), good for a 14th place tie, but just shy of advancing to Eugene.
