Tameka Jameson Wins 400m Hurdles at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – The 15th-ranked University of Miami women’s track team opened the prestigious Penn Relays with several impressive performances, led by Tameka Jameson, who claimed the 400m hurdle championship on Thursday.
Tameka Jameson dominated the 53-woman field in the 400m hurdles, as she crossed the finish line nearly one-and-a-half seconds faster than the next closest competitor, with a season-best time of 57.57 seconds.
Kristy Whyte, Charlene Fuller, Tarika Williams and Takecia Jameson made up the 4×100 relay team that advanced to the College Women’s 4×100 College Final. The quartet finished 17th out of 94 competing schools, with a time 45.74 seconds.
Two Hurricanes competed in Thursday afternoon’s College Women’s Long Jump Championship with Deandra Doyley taking fifth place with a leap of 6.26m (20-06.50) and sophomore Brittni Finch reaching an even 6.00m (19-08.25) for eighth place. Both Doyley and Finch will be participating in the triple jump on Friday.
Tameka and Takecia Jameson ran the first and last legs of the 4×400 relay, with Ti’erra Brown and Charlene Fuller the squad finished 12th out of 89 teams at 3:39.29. That time qualified the women for a slot in the College Women’s 4×400 College Final, Saturday at 5:35 p.m.
Junior Megan Novinger competed in the high jump, leaping 1.72m (5-07.75). The Miami native and All-ACC performer placed fourth out of 21 total competitors.
The Penn Relays is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious track and field relay event. Beginning in 1922 with the renovation of Franklin Field, the Penn Relays has hosted high schools and college track and field programs as well as amateur and professional athletes. This year there are over 1,200 schools that will be attending in front of a three-day audience that is expected to be over 100,000 strong.
The 15th-ranked women continue and the men’s squad will open competition in Saturday’s action.
The men and the women each will have a team in the College Sprint Medley Championship of America on Friday, with the women set to start at 6:30 p.m. and the men at 6:55 p.m.
The women will also participate in the 4×200 and the College Women’s Shuttle Hurdle Championships of America at 2:10 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. on Friday.
Tarika Williams will run in the College Women’s 100m dash, Friday at 3:30 p.m. and All-ACC performer Ti’erra Brown will compete in the College Women’s 100m hurdles at 3:50 p.m.
ACC Champion Cory Nelms is scheduled to compete in the College Men’s 110m Hurdles on Friday as well.
