Hurricanes Claim Three ACC Titles on Saturday

CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Miami track and field teams saw Tameka Jameson Cory Nelms and the women’s 4×400 relay claimed conference titles in the final day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Clemson’s Rock Norman Track and Field Complex on Saturday.

Cory Nelms won his second career ACC Title after a 13.82 second performance in the 110m hurdles. He also became the first Hurricane to win a conference championship in the event. In 2009, the Neptune, N.J. won an indoor title in the 60m hurdles. His effort on Saturday set a new personal-best and was the second-best showing in school history.

Tameka Jameson won her first conference title, winning the 400m dash in 53.34 seconds. In Friday’s preliminary races, Jameson was the top-overall performer with a nearly identical time of 53.33 seconds. The Upper Marlboro, Md. native is the fourth Hurricane to win the ACC title in the event since Miami joined the ACC prior to the 2004-05 season. Charlette Greggs won in 2005 and 2006 and Krista Simkins was the champion in 2008.

Later in the evening, Tameka ran the first leg of the champion 4×400 relay. She was joined by junior Ti’erra Brown, Charlene Fuller and Takecia Jameson. The squad won the race in a time of 3:36.33 – their second-best performance of the season. The last time of Miami won the 4×400 relay was in the 2004 season, while a member of the BIG EAST.

Junior Ti’erra Brown earned two more All-ACC honors, as she placed third in the 100 (12.70) and second in the 400m hurdles. Her time in the 400m hurdles of 55.55 seconds was a career-best and improved on her second-best mark in the school record book.

Takecia Jameson competed in both hurdle events as well, finishing with times of 13.28 and 59.29 seconds, placing seventh in the 100 and fifth in the 400m hurdles.

After placing second in the long jump on Friday, Deandra Doyley earned her second All-ACC accolades of these championships after her third-place showing in the triple jump. Her mark of 13.22m (43-04.50) trailed only Clemson’s Patricia Mamona and FSU’s Kimberly Williams.

Travis Benjamin earned his first All-ACC honor after cruising to a third place finish in 100m dash in 10.40 seconds. The sophomore qualified for the final after he ran a 10.53 in Friday’s preliminary heat.

Kristy Whyte, Tarika Williams and Charlene Fuller all scored in the 100m dash with fourth, sixth and seventh finishes. Whyte crossed the finish line in 11.38 seconds while Williams and Fuller timed out at 11.49 and 11.62 seconds respectively.

Whyte also scored in the 200m dash with a seventh-place finish in 23.55 seconds. Tameka Jameson placed led all `Canes, placing fifth in the event at 23.31 seconds. Williams was ninth with a time of 23.71 seconds.

Megan Novinger placed fourth in the high jump, as she leapt 1.74m (5-08.50), it was her best finish in an ACC Championship.

Miranda Wilson’s busy weekend concluded with an eighth-place result in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.59m (159-05.00). Wilson placed seventh in the shot put on Friday, reaching a career-best mark of 13.78m (45-02.50) and eighth in the discus on Friday.

Sophomore Devon Hill placed fourth in the 100m hurdles 13.93 seconds and also placed fifth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 53.42 seconds.

Overall, the women placed fourth with 84 points, while the men finished 10th with 28. Clemson claimed the team championship for the women, as Florida State captured the team title for the men.

The Hurricanes return to the track in five days when they travel to world biggest track meet, the Penn Relays, in Philadelphia, April 22-24.
