Bloomington, Ind. – The University of Miami rowing team wrapped up its opening weekend of action Saturday, finishing in fourth place with 31 points at the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind. Indiana University was the host for this year’s event, welcoming teams from Boston University, the University of Central Florida, Dayton University and the University of Miami in a two-day event that included head-to-head, 2,000-meter races on Lake Lemon at Riddle Point Park.

This year’s Dale England Cup will be tape-delayed on the Big Ten Network on Sun., Apr. 25, at 1 p.m.

Two sessions were held on Saturday, and the Hurricanes came away with 31 points to finish fourth overall. Host Indiana finished atop the pack, taking home the trophy, with 101 points, followed by Boston University (93 pts.) in second place, UCF (90 pts.) in third and Dayton (26 pts.) finishing in fifth place.

Miami began the opening session on Saturday in a head-to-head race against host Indiana, taking first place in the Novice Eight with a winning time of 7:55.4. The Hoosiers closed with a time of 8:00.6. In the N8+ race, Miami rowed the team of Alisha Bacchus (coxswain), Carin Mazaira (stroke), Blair Hamrick (7), Brittany Pirie (6), Maria Siemann (5), Taylor Forster (4), Aditi Sharma (3), Marie-Claire Serou (2) and Andrene Reid (bow).

The next race for UM came in the Varsity Eight, using the crew of Kate Rickers (bow), Theresa Recicar (2), Katalin Horvath (3), Molly Thornton (4), Hana Janatova (5), Sarah Medland (6), Monika Sajincic (7), Hannah McKay (stroke) and Christina Crocco (coxswain) against Boston’s V8+ crew. The `Canes collected a time of 6:54.1, against the Terriers’ winning mark of 6:44.5.

“I’m pretty proud of our kids right now,” said UM head rowing coach Andrew Carter, opening his first spring competition as the UM coach this weekend. “I think they raced very effectively under the circumstances, and they showed some real pride in the program. This is a real step forward as we continue to build this program. They put a solid brick in that foundation today, and they should be proud of their work. I think they learned a lot coming away from this weekend.”

In the afternoon session where the rain stopped after the first two races, Miami took part in the first race as a head-to-head competition against UCF in the Novice Eight. The Hurricanes crossed second with a time of 7:40.5, while the Knights of UCF turned in a time of 7:12.1. The next race for UM was also head-to-head battle against the Knights, this time in the Varsity Eight, where the `Canes finished 10 seconds behind the Knights in a second place time of 6:59.0, while UCF finished in 6:49.4.

“I think the team gained a lot of confidence from this weekend against some good competition,” said Carter. “I think they’ll take a fair amount of confidence from this event going into the next regatta. I got good feedback from the rowers during and after the races, and we had some good discussions. They identified some of the same things that I saw from the shore, and we’ll try and work on some of those things next week in practice. I think they came up with a good list to address next week, and we’re taking really good lessons that we can work on for the next race.”

Miami will use the next few days to practice and work, and will get back to competition again on Sat., Apr. 10, when the `Canes take part in the Knecht Cup. The event will run Apr. 2-3, and is taking place in Cherry Hill, N.J.
