400m Hurdlers Highlight Day One of Florida Relays for Hurricanes
April 2, 2010
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field teams, with a No. 15 ranking on the women’s side, saw success in the first day of the Florida Relays at the University of Florida’s Percy Beard Track on Friday. The second outdoor event of the season for the Hurricanes will continue Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
In arguably the most talented event at the Florida Relays, three Miami women placed in the top eight in the 400m hurdles, among 45 contestants. Ti’erra Brown finished second – behind the reigning national champion and 2008 Olympian, Virginia Tech’s Queen Harrison – with a time of 56.39 seconds. Tameka Jameson finished sixth in 57.83 seconds and her sister, Takecia Jameson, placed eighth in 58.14 seconds.
Junior Megan Novinger reached a new personal-best in the high jump, reaching 1.75m (5-08.75). The mark also moved her into third place all-time in the school record books. Former Hurricane Viktoria Andonova owns that school record and she won the event with a mark of 1.85m (6-00.75).
In her outdoor season debut in the event, Deandra Doyley placed third in the long jump, leaping 6.27m (20-06.75). Sophomore Brittni Finch leapt a season-best 5.85m (19-02.25). The duo will be joined by Christina Madry in the triple jump on Saturday afternoon.
Out of 55 competitors, the reigning ACC 60m champion, Ashley Dukes, placed 10th in the 100m dash, crossing the finish line in 11.54 seconds.
Janet Price and Jennifer Estime finished first and third in their 800m heat with times of 2:15.16 and 2:16.59, respectively.
Miranda Wilson improved on her season-opening mark in the discus by over two meters on Friday, reaching 44.13m (144-09.50). Wilson set a personal-best at the Hurricane Invitational two weeks ago in the hammer throw and followed that up with another solid performance, as her throw traveled 49.84m (163-06.25).
Sophomore Devon Hill won the third of seven heats in the 110m hurdles and placed seventh overall among the 46 competitors, with a time of 14.04 seconds. Hill also ran in the 400m hurdles, finishing with a time of 53.93 seconds.
The Florida Relays is one of the biggest meets in the country and features schools such as Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and UCF. In addition, a full contingent of post-collegians are competing.
Saturday, the relay races will start at noon, while the field events set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
Miami’s defensive tackle on the gridiron, Micanor Regis will compete in the shot put Saturday afternoon.
