Miami Volleyball Defeats FGCU in Spring Action
March 13, 2010
Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team collected a 3-1 victory (25-12, 25-17, 24-26, 25-14) over Florida Gulf Coast in a spring exhibition match on Saturday at the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Hurricanes scored wins in the first two sets of Saturday’s match, before falling in a close set to the Eagles during the third. UM finished off the 3-1 victory with a 25-14 advantage in the fourth set. The two teams played a fifth set just for extra practice, with the Eagles of FGCU claiming the 16-14 edge. The set was played to the normal 15-point rule of a regular match.
UM ninth-year head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch saw positive signs from the first spring match on Saturday, and hopes the Hurricanes will continue to grow from the match and upcoming practices and matches remaining in the spring campaign.
“The important thing about the spring is that you use it so that you’ll be at your best in the fall,” commented Lantagne Welch afterwards. “Our focus this spring is our offensive system. Today, we saw a glimpse of where we want to be with that, but we also found that we still have a lot to work on in order to perfect it. We did have our middles more involved with our offense – which was good to see. We’ll take the spring break week off and then get back to work before we head to Houston.”
Miami will next travel to Houston, Texas for a tournament hosted by Rice University on Sat., Mar. 27.
The spring schedule concludes with the annual Fiesta on Siesta Key beach volleyball classic on Sat., Apr. 17. Miami is participating as one of the 22-team field at the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Challenge on Siesta Key, Fla. Others participating in this year’s event include in-state schools such as Florida Gulf Coast, USF, Florida UCF, Stetson, Jacksonville, Florida State, Webber, Florida Atlantic, FIU and Southeastern – as well as a host of others outside the Sunshine State.
