July 16, 2009
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced that the University of Miami women’s track and field program was named a Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team for it’s performance in the classroom and on the track in both the 2009 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Earlier in the week, the USTFCCCA named UM junior Kristy Whyte and senior Nene Kamate to the All-Academic Team after advancing to the NCAA National Championships and posting a GPA above the 3.25 requirement.
As a team, the Hurricanes posted a spring GPA of 3.058 and finished the outdoor season with a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, tied with UCLA. At the indoor championships, Miami finished in a 12th-place tie with five other teams.
The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements, with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the respective Division I Indoor or Outdoor National Championships and cumulative GPA.
To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative grade-point average.
The `Canes were one of seven ACC teams among a total of 130 that were honored. Tennessee and Arizona State were tabbed the 2009 Division I Women’s Track and Field Scholar Teams of the Year, while the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga held the best GPA at 3.550.
