Miami opened up the spring campaign two weeks ago with a 3-1 victory over cross-town foe FIU at the Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla. In that match, UM got solid play from Ariell Cooke and Ali Becker, each expected to play big roles on the 2009 campaign for head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch.
UM is coming off one of the most successful seasons in Hurricanes volleyball history. The `Canes finished the 2008 campaign with a record of 26-6–the best regular season record in UM Division I history. The 2002 team that reached the `Sweet 16′ of the NCAA Tournament finished the year at 27-6.
