Lane Carico Named Rising Star by CVU

Coral Gables, Fla. – Hurricanes freshman volleyball player Lane Carico was recently named a Rising Star by Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU) in their list of 17 student-athletes that not only did well in 2008, but are expected to excel in the future.

On the year, the 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Manhattan Beach, California was among the best for the Orange and Green of Miami in several offensive categories. Carico led the `Canes in kills (369) while finishing ranked sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). She would finish up a stellar freshman campaign with a team-best 3.18 kills per set average while hoisting a .217 clip (369-136-1075). She also led UM in service aces (35) while also ranking sixth in the conference.

Carico also averaged 3.59 digs per set throughout the year, while also pulling in a team-leading 16 double-doubles.

After the season, Carico collected a multitude of honors, including ACC and AVCA East Region Rookie of the Year. She was also selected as an AVCA East Region Freshman Team member, as well as an East Region All-America Honorable Mention.

Mary Elizabeth Hooper of Wichita State was selected as CVU’s Freshman of the Year. Also being named as a Rising Star from the ACC was Duke’s Kellie Catanach.
