Lexington, Ky. – Lane Carico, a freshman volleyball student-athlete at the University of Miami, has been tabbed as the 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) East Region Freshman of the Year on her way to being named to the All-East Region Team announced Wednesday morning by the AVCA in Lexington, Kentucky. Teammate Angelica Ellis was billed as an honorable mention selection for the All-East Region Team.

On the year, the 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Manhattan Beach, California was among the best for the Orange and Green of Miami in several offensive categories. Carico led the `Canes in kills (369) while finishing ranked sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in that category. She would finish up a stellar freshman campaign with a team-best 3.18 kills per set average while hoisting a.217 (369-136-1075) clip on the season. She also led UM in service aces (35) while also ranking sixth in the ACC.

“It’s nice to get rocognition, but these accomplishments reflect the success of my team and coaches as well,” expressed Carico, the 2008 ACC Freshman of the Year. “I feel lucky to be a part of such a great program.”

Just one week ago, Carico was selected as the school’s first-ever ACC Volleyball Freshman of the Year, also being tabbed as an All-ACC Second Team and Freshman Team member. Carico finished the season with a team-best 16 double-double performances, including a 16-kill, 24-dig performance in UM’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over in-state rival Florida State in the season finale. She collected 19 overall double-digit kills matches on the year to go along with 22 matches in which she registered double-digits for digs.

Miami senior Angelica Ellis was named as an Honorable Mention for the AVCA East Region Team after being selected to the All-ACC Second Team as well. Ellis, a native of Houston, Texas, led the Hurricanes in hitting percentage (.350) while ranking sixth in the league, as well as leading the team in blocks with 93 (11 solo, 82 asst.). She was also fifth on the squad in service aces (26), and collected 69 digs from her middle blocker position.

Angelica Ellis finishes up her Miami career sixth on the all-time list for blocks in school history with 264 to her credit. She also sits in third place all-time for attack percentage throughout a career, enjoying a .275 clip (538-206-1,209) in her four-year career for the Orange and Green.

With Carico and Ellis both collecting AVCA postseason recognition, they become the first AVCA Region award honorees for any Hurricanes student-athlete since 2005 when Karla Johnson and Francheska Savage were selected to the East Region Team.
