San Marcos, Texas – The Hurricanes collected two more wins and Genny Mayhew was named MVP as the University of Miami volleyball team captured a 4-0 record en route to the championship at the Century Tel Premier Tournament hosted by Texas State University.

The Hurricanes swept through opponents Texas-Pan American and Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday as they finished unbeaten in a regular season tournament away from the James L. Knight Sports Complex for the first time since 2005. Ironically, the `Canes opened up that season with a similar unbeaten record on the road in the state of Texas at the Houston Tournament (Houston, Texas).

Miami (4-0) fought past Texas-Pan American in the first match of the day on scores of 25-10, 25-21 and 25-20. The Broncs (1-2) pushed the Hurricanes in each of the last two sets, but committed 21 attack errors in the match to aid the Hurricanes’ cause. Meanwhile, the `Canes hit above .300 for the first of what would be two matches on the day with an attack percentage of .347 overall. They had 41 kills to just six errors.

Redshirt senior Ashley Woods had a team-high 11 kills (season-high) and five blocks, while teammate Mayhew picked up her third consecutive double-digit kills match with 10. She added two blocks as well.

Cassie Loessberg picked up 18 digs and freshman Lane Carico had 11 to lead the defensive efforts of the Orange and Green. Maria Andersson served up a career-high tying four aces as she would have four aces later in the day as well.

Lici McGee added seven kills for the Hurricanes and four blocks (assisted). Setter Katie Gallagher helped out running the offense with a match-high 31 assists.

UTPA used double-digit kills from Kellie Phelps (12) and Noelle Mayor (10) to stay close. Chelsea Blakely pitched in with 24 assists and 11 digs.

In the final match of the tournament, Miami was just too much for Louisiana-Monroe–a team that won just one match a year ago, as the Hurricanes swept the Warhawks on scores of 25-11, 25-6 and 25-12.

Angelica Ellis led the way offensively with a match-high seven kills while teammate Mayhew picked up five. Carico helped out defensively with eight digs as Loessberg led the way with 10.

Bridget Bomhack saw her first time at setter this year as she led the offensive sets with 11 assists, three kills, three digs and two blocks. Maria Andersson used a powerful serve to collect four service aces in the match.ULM (0-3) was led by Mari O’Neal with four kills and two service aces. The Warhawks were limited to a hitting percentage of (-.118) while they had just 12 kills with 21 errors. The `Canes picked up their second consecutive match hitting above .300 with a mark of .397 as they registered 31 kills on 63 attacks with just six errors.

As stated earlier, Mayhew was named as the MVP of the tournament. Loessberg and Gallagher were named to the All-Tournament Team as well.

The first home match for the `Canes will be Sept. 4-6 when they host the annual Hurricane Invitational at the Knight Sports Complex. Season and individual match tickets are on sale and available by calling (800) G0-CANES. You can also order online by visiting www.hurricanesports.com.
