May 12, 2008 Coral Gables, FLA (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Sophomore Laura Vallverdu has been named the Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the period May 5-11. Vallverdu, playing number one singles and doubles, led Miami to victories over Qunnipiac (4-0) on Friday and Notre Dame (4-1) on Saturday as the Hurricanes won the Coral Gables Regional and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the fourth time in five years. The Sweet 16 will be hosted by the University of Tulsa from May 15 to 20. Against Quinnipiac, Vallverdu teamed with Romy Farah to win their doubles match over Mary Wilson and Adrienne Markison 8-1 and then came back to defeat Wilson 6-0, 6-0 in singles play. The No. 20 ranked pair of Vallverdu and Farah defeated Notre Dame’s No. 3 ranked doubles team of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft 8-6 on Saturday. Vallverdu, ranked 19th in singles, went on to defeat Tefft 6-2, 6-3 to win the number one singles point. |
