Cordner, a native of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and Amsler, a native of Redmond, Wash., have been key parts of UM’s 1st Varsity Eight team that earned wins over Indiana and Eastern Michigan earlier in the spring before placing fourth on Saturday with a time of 6:46.3 at the ACC Championship on Lake Hartwell.
For Cordner, it was the second consecutive year she was given the honor. Last season, she was joined by teammate Laura Coltman on the 2007 All-ACC Team.
This season, the duo has rowed alongside teammates Shira Kharrazi (coxswain), Louise Parry (stroke), Emily Wingrove, Sarah Medland, Bethany Krawec, Monika Sajincic and Tara Eddings (bow) in the Varsity Eight boat.
Clemson freshman Liz Robb of Roswell, Ga. was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-ACC Rowing Team.
Virginia coxswain Caitlin Mixter earned her third straight All-ACC Rowing accolade, becoming the first coxswain in ACC history to be named to the All-ACC team three times. North Carolina senior Lisy McIntee was also named to the all-conference team for the third consecutive year. Mixter and McIntee are only the third and fourth ACC rowers to be named three times to the All-ACC Rowing team. Duke’s Joanna Hingle (2001-03) and Clemson’s Sarah Cooper (2005-07) are the others.
Sauer was named ACC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his nine years at UVa.
Robb, Mixter and McIntee led the All-ACC team selections which also included Kelsie Chaudoin, Katrin Sydlik, Bridget Wandelt and Augusta Stratos of Virginia; Suzanne Van Fleet and Jessica Leidecker of Clemson; Gwen Coleman and Alex Japhet of Duke; Ruby Woodside of North Carolina, Tracy Maciolek of BostonCollege in addition to Cordner and Amsler.
Miami finished fourth in three of four events in Saturday morning for a fifth-place finish at the championship. Virginia claimed its ninth consecutive ACC Rowing Championship, winning three of the four races, while Clemson came away victorious in one race – the Novice Eight – while placing second in the other three. UVa earned 58 points for the championship, while Clemson, Duke and North Carolina placed second through fourth while Miami finished in fifth-place finish with 24 points.
