The Move
Why did the University decide to move the Hurricanes home football games? The University carefully considered both the option of playing in a partially renovated Orange Bowl facility and a move to Dolphin Stadium. After much deliberation we determined that fans and student-athletes would be best served by a game-day experience in a state-of-the art facility. Dolphin Stadium will provide an incredible game-day experience through its many amenities and conveniences.
Why not spend the money to upgrade the Orange Bowl? The University plays only six or seven games a year at the stadium. We couldn’t justify the spending of more than $200 million on a partial renovation of the Orange Bowl. Our top priority is to offer our students-athletes and tens of thousands of fans the best game experience possible. The Orange Bowl chapter of our history will always remain a legacy to the University.
When is the move taking place? The move is expected for the 2008 football season.
How long is our contract to play at the stadium? Our contract is for 25 years.
How far is Dolphin Stadium from UM’s campus? The Stadium is located in Miami Gardens about 21 miles from the University’s Coral Gables campus.
What will the stadium be called? Stadium officials are committed to identifying a corporate sponsor name for the facility and a neutral name is expected to be chosen by 2010.
