Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team will continue their spring season as they prepare to race in the Petrakis Cup Saturday morning at Lake Pickett in Orlando, Fla. This year’s competition will be hosted by the University of Central Florida.

Tomorrow’s race marks the first time the Hurricanes will be participating in this annual race, formerly between Jacksonville University and the University of Central Florida dating back to 1992. This weekend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Tulane University will be making their second consecutive appearance at the race.

Three awards are handed out at the competition including the Mary B. Petrakis Cup that is presented to the winner of the women’s races, while the second award goes to the winner of the men’s races. The Petrakis Cup is the final award handed out to the overall points winner of both the men’s and women’s races.

The Hurricanes, who are just coming off a three-day dual meet at the Longhorn Invitational, will have five boats competing this weekend.

The race, featuring men and women with the men’s Varsity 8 opening the day, will be followed by the women’s Varsity 8 as the first boat out on the water for the Hurricanes beginning at 8:15 a.m.

The JV 8 squad will continue at 8:45 a.m. followed by the Novice 8 boat at 9:15 a.m.

At 9:45 a.m. the women’s Varsity 4 boat will continue, as the Novice 4 will wrap-up the final race for the women at 10:45 a.m.
