Hurricane Rowing Captures Four First Place Finishes at the Longhorn Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas. – The University of Miami rowing team won two races over Iowa and Kansas respectively on the second day of racing at the Longhorn Invitational held on Town Lake in Austin Saturday.
The day got started with the Varsity 4 capturing the first win of the morning with Jessica Cruz (coxswain), Julianne Parker, Stacey Kerr, Sarah Stocks, and Rachael Sporko posting a first place finish of 8:00.2 ahead of Iowa who crossed the line at 8:04.7.
The JV 8 competed in an amazingly close race and managed to capture the first place win with a time of 6:55.0 compared to Iowa’s 6:55.8. The boat consisted of Jordan Louie (coxswain), Hannah McKay, Karalyn Van Aken, Valerie Webb, Emy Huntsman, Olivia Arkell, Marenda Chamberlin, Bethany Krawec, and Marleena Eyre.
The morning races finished with the Varsity 8 taking second place. The Hurricanes, with rowers Meghan Leydecker (coxswain), Caitlin Augustin, Natasha Lejer, Karen Wiley, Kelly Amsler, Molly Wilson, Laura Cordner, Laura Coltman, and Sarah Conlon, crossed the finish line at 6:50.8 behind Iowa who placed first with a time of 6:46. 0.
In the afternoon, Miami’s Varsity 4 raced against the Texas Club Crew with a slight head wind and finished second with a time of 8:47.6.
The Hurricanes showed great stride as they the finished their last two races of the day with first place finishes. The JV8 finished at 7:45.6 ahead of Kansas State (8:04.3). The Varsity 8 led Miami’s final race ahead of Kansas State with a 7:15.8 finish, while the Wildcats finished at 7:31.6
The Hurricanes will conclude action at the Longhorn Invitational Sunday morning with races from all three Eights and Varsity 4 taking on ACC foe Duke University.
