Williams Anchors United States Relay To Gold Medal

Helsinki, Finland (hurricanesports.com) – Former University of Miami sprinter Lauryn Williams anchored the United States’ 4×100-meter relay to the gold medal on Saturday at the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
The USA relay of Angela Daigle, Muna Lee, Me’Lisa Barber and Williams won with a time of 41.78 seconds marking the fastest in the World this season.
The gold medal is the second of the World Championships for Williams who won the 100-meter title on Monday. Williams has now won eight medals while competing for the United States in international competition, including five gold medals.In 2004 Williams took home the silver medal in the 100-meters at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
In 2003, Williams captured gold medals in the 100-meters and 4×100-meter relay at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominica Republic, as well as a silver medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the World Championships in Paris, France.
Williams captured the gold medal in the 100-meter and the silver medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the 2002 World Junior Track and Field Championships in Kingston, Jamaica.
Williams was a nine-time All-American while competing for the University of Miami from 2002-04, capping her Hurricane career by winning the 2004 NCAA title in the 100-meters.
In the preliminaries of the men’s 4×400-meter relay former Hurricane great Davian Clarke anchored Jamaica to a second-place finish in heat one, qualifying them for Sunday’s final.
The Jamaicans finished in a time of 2:59.75 marking a season-best and the second fastest of the qualifying round. The Bahamas, which won the heat, posted a time of 2:59.73, the fastest in the world this year.
