June 12, 2005
Sacramento, Calif. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami senior Kim Barrett (Miami Gulliver Prep) closed out her senior season by winning the shot put with a school-record throw of 18.20 meters (59-08.50) at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
Barrett, who also won the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships, has dominated the event this season winning 10 consecutive events and 12 of 13 competitions overall.
“Coming into this season I wanted to improve on last year,” said Barrett after the meet. “I wasn’t happy with my performance last season and I wanted to make sure I learned from my mistakes.”
Just as she did at the ACC Championship and the NCAA East Regional Championship, Barrett’s winning toss came early in the competition, on just her second attempt of the night.
“I knew the competition here would be tough so I wanted to make sure I got a solid throw in the preliminaries,” added Barrett. “The later you go in the competition the more difficult it becomes because of fatigue.”
Junior Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 55.60 seconds earning All-American honors for the second consecutive season in the event.
Darden also earned All-American honors as a member of the Hurricane’s 4×100-meter relay on Friday and ran the third leg of the All-American 4×400-meter relay on Saturday to give her a school record 10 career All-American honors. Darden surpassed the old mark of nine set by former UM greats Lauryn Williams (2002-04) and Gillian Russell (1992-95).
Junior Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) earned All-American honors in the 200-meters placing ninth in a time of 24.08 seconds. Greggs, who competed despite suffering from flu-like symptoms, also earned All-America honors this weekend by running in the preliminaries of both the 4×100-meter relay and 4×400-meter relay giving her nine honors for her career.
In the triple jump, sophomore Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) earned All-America honors finishing sixth with a school record jump of 13.50 meters (44-03.50).
Miami’s 4×400-meter relay of senior Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas), sophomore Ginou Etienne (Miami Central), Darden, and freshman Lauren Austin (Oviedo, Fla.) ended the Championship with a school record performance. The foursome earned All-America honors for the fourth consecutive season finishing fourth in a school record time of 3:28.78.
Also competing on Saturday was senior Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.) who finished 17th in the heptathlon with 5237 points, and senior Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) who finished 11th in the shot put with a mark of 15.65 meters (51-03.50).
As a team the Hurricanes recorded their second consecutive top-10 finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finishing ninth with 23 points. Miami’s point total and finish are highest ever at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Miami had eight women earn a school record 14 All-America honors.
