CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. Despite delays due to severe thunderstorms, the University of Miami rowing team completed the first day of racing at the ninth annual Aramark Central/South Region Championships on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Saturday afternoon. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The Hurricanes competed in the Open 4+, Varsity 4+ and the Varsity and Junior Varsity 8+, reaching the C Final in all but the Open 4+ where they reached the B Final.

In the headline race, the Varsity 8+ finished in the fastest heat of the regatta. UM came back to finish second behind Clemson with a time of 6:51.18 in the C/B semifinal. Miami was eight tenths of a second slower than Duke, who finished with a time of 6:51.09 in the other semifinal.

The Hurricanes, who have competed against Duke at the ACC Championships and in a dual-race at Indian Creek in Miami Beach, are looking for their first victory against the Blue Devils this season at the C Final tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. where they will also race against Cincinnati, Clemson, Texas and Kansas.

“I finally feel like we are having good races,” said head coach Debra Morgan. “Technically they are above their age. We have many sophomores in the varsity eight crew and they have really stepped up this year.”

“They have performed well under the pressure and expectations of such a fast regatta. They have improved but obviously we still need to gain more speed.”

The Open 4+ was the only Miami boat to reach the B Final. The Hurricane crew of Cox-Stephanie Prochazka, Michelle Pinon, Julianne Parker, Meghan White, Charlotte Hillery came in second in Heat 1 behind Ohio State (7:37. 80) and finished ahead of Kansas (8:17.45), Clemson (8:35.63) and Duke (9:01.46).

In the first repechage the Hurricanes finished with at time of 9:11.46 that placed them in tomorrow’s 9:40 a.m. B Final against Clemson, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Indiana, Kansas and Duke.

The Varsity 4+ will race against Kansas, Cincinnati, UCF and Kansas State at 9:10 a.m. followed by the Junior Varsity 8+ at 9:20 a.m. They will compete against crews from UCF, Kansas State, Cincinnati, North Carolina and Louisville.
